About Us

Strandhill Surgery is a caring family practice located in the scenic village of Strandhill, County Sligo.

The practice was established by Dr. Siobhan Tobin. Siobhan graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1985 and completed the Sligo Specialist GP training scheme in 1991. She established Strandhill Surgery in 1992 initially from her home in Strandhill. The practice relocated to the current modern purpose built premises in 2003. The main aim of Strandhill Surgery is to provide high quality medical care, in a holistic, personalised and friendly manner to patients of all ages.

Strandhill Surgery is a Training Practice with the Sligo Specialist GP Training Scheme, and we usually have a GP Registrar on placement with us for 6-12 month periods.

Dr Spellman graduated from National University of Ireland, Galway in 2014. She worked in Dublin and New Zealand, before returning to her native Sligo. On successful completion of specialist training in General Practice, she graduated as a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners 2020. She worked as a GP in Sligo Town, before joining the practice here in Strandhill. She is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners and is listed on the Specialist Registrar of General Practice with the Irish Medical Council.

Her special interests include Women’s Health including long acting contraceptive options and Paediatrics. Dr Spellman holds the following qualifications

  • Diploma in Women’s Health, RCPI
  • Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine ICGP/FSEM

Dr. Matt O’Mahony

Dr. O’ Mahony studied medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He subsequently worked in emergency medicine in Australia. On returning to Ireland he completed the four year vocational South West GP training scheme. He then moved to Canada where he worked as a principal GP for a number of years. His clinic in Canada also provided a minor surgery service where he gained extensive experience working alongside highly skilled clinicians. He spent time training in the UBC sports medicine specialist clinic in Vancouver prior to recently returning to Ireland. He has completed the specialty exams in Sports and Exercise Medicine UK. He is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners and he is listed on the specialist register of general practice with the Irish Medical Council.

He holds the following qualifications:

  • Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine, UCC
  • Diploma in Medicine for the Elderly, RCPI
  • Diploma in Child Health, RCSI
  • Certificate in Orthopaedic Medicine, ISOM
  • Certificate in Contraception, ICGP
  • Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada
  • Certification in The College of Family Physicians, Canada
  • Member of the Faculty Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK)

Nurse Caroline Henry

Caroline graduated from St James’ Hospital School of Nursing, Dublin in 1995. She has previous hospital and General Practice Nursing experience and has been working with Strandhill Surgery since 2012.

Her calm competent manner and sense of humour endear her to young and old alike. She is available to take appointments for blood tests, vaccinations, cervical smears (register beforehand on www.cervicalcheck.ie) and wound dressings from Tuesday to Friday mornings inclusive and Thursday afternoons.
